In the summer of 2014, I went to New York (I was playing my first USA show in Rockwood Music hall!), for some of my stay, I stayed on 5th Avenue, in the middle of Manhattan, with a view of the iconic Empire State Building literally from my bedroom window!

If you go directly on the National Rail website, you won't find these prices, but if you Google - National Rail Cheap Fare Finder , you will be led to this section of the site. 

It's saved me loads of money! Generally, the journeys are a little longer, or you have a change instead of a continuous journey. 
BUT, well worth it to save a few quid (and sometimes to save a lot!)

This is one of the best sites I have found. If you need to go to Ireland (or anywhere in the world in fact) last minute, and airfares are preposterously high, you can take the train and ferry and cut costs, and Mark Smith, the owner of Seat 61 website tells you how!

For instance, you can book the day before to travel from London - Dublin for only £38 via train and ferry! Yes I know, cheap as chips right. Obviously, there is a downside of course, it will take you the best part of the day to reach your destination. BUT it will SAVE YOU ALOT of money, especially if it is last minute!

Mark gives you detailed information about how to travel via trains all around the world. It's an amazing resource!
